Until his death in January 2010, recluse J.D. Salinger was known for shunning his fans for peace and privacy.  Today, he’d be mortified to learn his toilet of all things, has become a literary-giant collectible.

A memorabilia dealer is hawking the 1962-vintage throne for $1 million on eBay. (Not exactly the next unpublished manuscript rumored to have been left behind by the ‘Catcher in the Rye’ author.)

Personally, you couldn’t give me that hunk of junk, even if you paid me, and here’s why…That toilet is guaranteed to be a paper clogging, behemoth of a water guzzler.
Yup, it’s true.

In fact, the only people who’ll actually profit from this, are the folks who did the bathroom remodel and removed it.

What a darn shame that Salinger didn’t know he could have had pocketed an extra $2,000 while he was still alive.  (Figure 140,000 flushes with net water saving of 4,000 gallons per year times 45 years at a little over a penny a gallon.)

How? He should have used a high-efficiency WaterSense toilet.

So called HET’s have been completely redesigned for excellent service using an efficient 1.28 gallons or less per flush.  That’s important because toilets are by far the main consumer of your home water use. That’s nearly 30% of your water-sewer bill!

Toilets also happen to be a major source of wasted water due to leaks or just general inefficiency.

If you and every American family with older, wasteful home toilets replaced them with new WaterSense labeled toilets, we would save nearly 640 billion gallons of water per year.  The EPA says that’s equal to more than two weeks of flow over Niagara Falls!

Changing a toilet is a quick do-it-yourself project that can be completed on a Saturday afternoon.  Many areas, utilities offer rebates and vouchers that can lower the price of a WaterSense labeled toilet.

Now that you know, don’t be left behind – Make time Today to pick out a WaterSense toilet.

By the way, over the last nine months we’ve slowly changed out each of our three toilets. We are enjoying tax donation benefits from the recycled building store, and lower monthly utility bills!

Comment here about how many home toilets you can switch out to start Your pile of savings.  (J.D. Salinger no doubt would be very jealous…)

I never really realized how much water the average toilet goes through in it’s lifetime. I’ll have to look into these WaterSense ones.
